Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the June 2025 workshop unique?

This workshop is being led by large scale farmer and Soil Food Web mentor, Nick Padwick, who manages the 4,000-acre Wild Ken Hill Estate.

Nick typically has around 1.5 miles (2km) of compost windrows in production at any time. And he’s developed machinery that enables him to apply compost extract to approximately 250-acres (or 100Ha) each day. So, this is a great opportunity for students who want to use the soil food web approach at large scale, as you’ll be able to take a look at Nick’s operation.

We’ll be covering small scale application too, so everyone is welcome and will benefit from this workshop, but if large scale implementation is one of your goals, this workshop is well suited to your needs.

What is the course Structure, Duration, and relevant Dates?

Workshop dates: June 16-27, 2025.

There’ll be a two-day break on the weekend of June 21-22.

Registration cut-off date is April 30, 2025.

You can view the tentative daily schedule here. Please be aware that the schedule is INDICATIVE only. As we will be building 5 compost piles simultaneously and because we cannot accurately predict pile temperatures, we will need to make changes to the schedule almost every day.

Will there be organized Q&A sessions?

There will be daily Q&A sessions throughout the workshop to ensure that all of your questions are answered.

Will I be able to interact with the instructor and ask questions?

Yes. As a student attending the workshop, you will be assigned an instructor to work with you in a small group of 4 people. Your instructor will work closely with you and will answer questions throughout this two-week intensive workshop. In addition to working with your group of 4 people, you will also participate in lectures and other activities with all attendees at the workshop, and you’ll have the opportunity to interact with all workshop instructors.

Will I be able to join the workshop late? I am not sure I can attend for all the dates listed.

No, attendees are not permitted to join the workshop late or leave early. As this is a two-week intensive, it requires that you attend all ten days of the workshop to get a Certificate of Attendance and to graduate Stages 1&2 of the CTP/GTP.

Weekend activities are optional.

If you are not able to attend this entire workshop, it is better to wait until the next live workshop when you’re able to attend for all ten days. Please fill out this form to let us know your location and date preferences for a future workshop.

What happens if I sign up and then can’t go for some reason, can I get a refund?

Students who register for the workshop can cancel on or before April 30, 2025. After this date, no refund is available.

We will create a waitlist, in case there are any cancellations.

Can I attend this workshop if I have already attended a workshop?

Yes, you are welcome to join us for this workshop even if you have attended an in-person training with us previously.

Who is eligible to attend this workshop?

Registration is initially ONLY open to CTP/GTP Students and those on the waitlist for either program. From March 8, registration will be opened up to any student who has completed FC3.

If you have completed FC3, but not FC4, you will be required to watch all the lectures in FC4 before you attend the workshop, but you will not be required to have taken FC4 quizzes (we’ll set you up with a special pass so you can skip the quizzes). This is to ensure that you have a good understanding of the microscopy that will be used at the workshop. Please see the prerequisites for attendance and the Enrolment Agreement for more information.

Is there any insurance I am required to have before I attend this workshop?

Every student is responsible for acquiring travel and medical insurance for the workshop.

Will I receive a certificate when I finish the Workshop?

Yes. All students who attend the entire workshop will receive a digital Certificate of Attendance via email after the course.

How is it possible to graduate Stages 1 and 2 in a 10-day workshop?

This is a new learning pathway that is equivalent to, but different from, the regular pathway that all CTP/GTP students are on. All the learning outcomes in Stages 1 and 2 are met in the workshop (excluding completion of the Certified Lab-Tech Program, please see below for further information), which is ideal for students who learn best in an in-person environment.

In this workshop, students are able to graduate Stages 1 & 2 by virtue of the fact that they will have an in-depth and immersive learning experience that includes the production of 5 compost piles (minimum) by the group, over a 10-day period. You’ll learn from compost piles that are designed to succeed and others that are designed to fail, so that you can understand the principles and mechanics at play, and some of the techniques that can be used to rescue a failing pile. You will also conduct nematode extractions and protozoan infusions, and you’ll make a compost extract and a compost tea at the workshop (satisfying Stage 2 outcomes). In addition to this, you’ll be using your microscopy skills to assess the compost and liquid amendments, at key stages. This applied microscopy is an invaluable experience.

All learning outcomes from Stages 1 and 2 are covered in this intensive and informative learning experience which is sufficient for graduation of Stages 1 & 2 except for completion of the Certified Lab-Tech Program (CLP). Students who are joining the workshop but who have yet to complete all the FCs and/or the CLP, may do so after the workshop, at which time they will graduate Stages 1 & 2 of the CTP/GTP. Please read the Enrolment Agreement for further information before you register.

I’m currently enrolled in the CTP or GTP. Will I graduate Stage 1 and 2 of the CTP/GTP by attending this workshop?

All students who are already enrolled in Stage 1 of either the CTP or GTP, are guaranteed to graduate both Stages 1 & 2 of their program, if they:

  1. Attend all 10 days of the workshop and fully participate in all activities.
  2. Successfully complete the CLP (either before or after the workshop).

Students who are joining the workshop but who have yet to complete all the FCs and/or the CLP, may do so after the workshop, at which time they will graduate Stages 1 & 2 of the CTP/GTP.

How do I progress to Stage 3?

Please see the Prerequisites for Entering Stage 3 of the CTP or GTP in the Enrolment Agreement.

I’ve already paid for Stage 1 and/or Stage 2 of the CTP/GTP. What happens to the hours I haven’t used?

If you have already paid for Stage 1 and have not used all your allotted Mentor/Instructor time in Stage 1, you can use any residual Mentor/Instructor Time to complete the CLP if you have not already done so. After successful completion of the CLP, you may use any residual Mentor/Instructor time to:

  1. Get assistance with preparing your compost for entry to Stage 3
  2. Supplement your Stage 3 Mentor/Instructor Time

No other uses of residual Mentor/Instructor Time is permitted.

If you have already paid for Stage 2, you will be entitled to a $500 coupon that you can use to purchase certain products from the Soil Food Web School e.g. Additional Instructor/Mentor Time, Stage 3 of the CTP/GTP, the Introduction to Ecosystem Restoration, the Permaculture Design Course (subject to availability). Please contact Student Support for more information.

Please read all the Terms and Conditions in the Enrolment Agreement.

Is there a payment plan available?

No payment plans are available. However, U.S. residents can pay using Affirm, which allows them to pay over time.

Do we need to bring our microscope to the Workshop?

Yes, students are requested to bring their own microscope to this workshop. Please be advised that you do so at your own risk. The Soil Food Web School cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage to your personal equipment or belongings. If you are unable to bring a microscope, please email [email protected] and we will do our best to organize a shared microscope.

Where is the information about the Health and Safety Guidelines?

Health and Safety guidelines are included in the Workshop Handbook. Please read it with special attention to any health and safety information before attending the workshop.

In an effort to prevent paper waste, you will be sent a copy of the Workshop Handbook via Signaturely to sign electronically before the start of the workshop. If you are unable to sign via Signaturely, we will ask you to fill out the emergency contact information, sign, and return the last page to the SFWS Safety Officer on Day 1 of the workshop.

Will meals be provided during the workshop?

During the workshop (Monday to Friday), lunch will be provided onsite for all attendees; please plan to stay onsite for this meal as we want to ensure that sessions before and after lunch start and end on time. Attendees are expected to provide their own breakfasts and dinners.
