How to Sample Roots

As for any sample, several sub-samples should be taken and mixed together to be as representative of the area of interest as possible.

Take the sample half-way between the drip line of the plant and the stem of the plant. If in a crop field, go along the crop row, not out into the wheel row where the soil is compacted and not representative of where the plant has itâs roots.

Dig down into the soil until roots are encountered and remove a few inches of root from that spot. You may need to continue to dig downward to get enough root material. Combine this root material with the other samples from this area.

Do not dry, wet, heat, cool or otherwise alter conditions in the sample. Send to the closest SFI lab, but roots do not have to be sent overnight mail. Please include the correct sample submission form, completely filled out.
