There is a range of products that will improve the soil foodweb when applied to the soil or the foliar foodweb when applied to the leaves. This section includes worm casts and leachates, modified composts, sleeping teas and products to make teas, inoculums of microorganisms and other mixtures. Pure composts and fresh compost teas are covered in other sections.

The manufacturers listed are part of our ongoing Product Quality Assurance program. This involves two types of tests; the microbial content of the product and/or the soil response tests. The microbial content tests are assays of the numbers of microorganisms in the actual product; while the soil response tests involves setting up soil field tests where the numbers of microorganisms in the soil after treatment with the product is compared to an untreated control. The soil response test gives a better indication of how the product will work in practice than the microbial content test.

The product testing (both types of test) is carried out initially with three different batches of product to check for consistency. Subsequent testing is at the discretion of the manufacturer. As microorganisms can vary in biological products, products that are tested more frequently with consistent results may be more reliable.
