Sustainable Soil Solutions make a great tea! Compost Tea (bio-innoculums) can be used in a general way as a liquid soil fertiliser, or applied as a foliar fertiliser. Luke Maunder of Sustainable Soil Solutions (SSS) has worked over several years to develop & produce quality Compost-T & bio-innoculums. Sustainable Soil Solutions is the first fully certified brewing centre in the Northern Rivers region & is an OGA (Organic Growers Association) certified organic producer.

Over the last few years, Luke has worked closely with the Soil Food Web Institute conducting research & development on Compost-T bio-innoculums. Lukes’ work in this field has aimed to demonstrate to farmers & growers the effectiveness of the biological approach to soil fertility, plant nutrition & pest & disease management. Compost-T not only improves soil fertility, it increases plant vigour & crop yields, and also assists in pests & disease suppression.

Our aim at SSS has been to assist farmers in recognising the importance of soil health & biodiversity & to see both the economic & environmental benefits that can be obtained when changing from traditional chemical-based approaches to a more ‘holistic’ biological approach to farming. Compost-T has been very successful for increasing crop yields in macadamia, coffee, and fruit production, increased brix levels (sugar content) in sugarcane, improving the palatability of dairy pastures & quality of golf, turf & bowling greens.

Farmers, gardeners & greenkeepers that have been using Compost-T & other biological fertiliser products from SSS have not only reported increases in crop yields, but have also seen a reduction in many of the insect pests & diseases specific to their crops. In the case of one particular dairy farmer, applications of Compost-T actually worked to destroy weed species as well as improving the quality of the pasture!

SSS inoculums are brewed over an extended time, produced to strict quality assurance procedures in SFI & OGA certified equipment. The SSS Compost-T is produced from all organic materials, the basis of which is quality compost, combined with water & ‘foods’ such as molasses & kelp. The tea is then literally ‘brewed’ over several hours & is oxygenated to ensure the organisms within are kept ‘alive’. The resulting ‘tea’ is basically a super-concentrate liquid that acts to innoculate soil & plants with beneficial micro-organisms.

Compost-T can transform compacted, lifeless soils into healthy bio-diverse soil ecosystems. The use of Compost-T will lead to increased soil fertility & crop yields, improved plant vigour & resistance to disease & pests. Compost-T reduces the environmental ‘cost’ of using harmful, toxic chemicals on our soils but also the economical cost to the farmer in terms of reduced chemical use.
